In the UK, a significant number of properties remain unoccupied while homelessness continues to escalate, highlighting a crucial crisis in the housing sector.
The Stark Reality of Empty Homes
Recent data reveals a concerning trend in the UK's housing situation. As of 2023, there are around 250,000 properties in England that have been empty for more than six months. Additionally, another 200,000 empty homes are exempt from council tax, bringing the total vacancy to over 676,000. This number includes long-term empty homes, which alone account for 250,000 properties.
Homelessness on the Rise
On the flip side of this housing dilemma, homelessness is a growing concern. Research from Shelter indicates that at least 271,000 people, including 123,000 children, are recorded as homeless in England. On any given night in 2023, estimates suggest that 300,000 households could be experiencing severe forms of homelessness. Additionally, on a single night in June 2023, around 2,893 people were found sleeping rough on the streets of England.
Conscious Homes: A Solution in Action
At Conscious Homes, we are deeply concerned about this issue and are committed to being part of the solution. We are actively seeking to purchase properties that are currently sitting empty across the UK. Our goal is to renovate these homes and put them back into circulation, providing much-needed housing options. By doing so, we aim to not only alleviate the burden of homelessness but also revitalize communities with previously unused properties.
A Call for Action
This alarming contrast between vacant homes and those without a home calls for urgent action. While there are numerous factors contributing to both empty properties and homelessness, the potential to use these unused homes to alleviate the homelessness crisis is an avenue that demands exploration and action.
